The Security Council of Iran convened this morning (Wednesday) for an emergency discussion following the assassination of the head of Hamas' political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh.

Iranian sources told the Reuters news agency that the meeting was attended by senior commanders of the Revolutionary Guards, and that the council will determine Iran's strategy in response to the elimination of Haniye.

The New York Times reported this morning that according to two Iranian officials, the meeting of Iran's Supreme Security Council is being held at the residence of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and that the commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards, Ismail Qaani, who replaced the well-known Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani who was killed in 2020 by the US, is also participating.

In the first official announcement published this morning by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the elimination of the Haniyeh, Tehran said that "the fall of the Haniyeh in Tehran will strengthen and deepen the unassailable bond between Tehran, Palestine and the resistance", and that "the blood of the Haniyeh was not shed in vain."
