Southern ports prepare to serve as tensions in the North rise

The preparations are in response to potential scenarios in the northern region. Following a situation assessment held yesterday by Transportation Minister Miri Regev, the Director-General of the Ministry of Transportation, Moshe Ben Zaken, visited the Ashdod and Southern Ports today (Sunday) to closely observe their readiness to serve as alternative ports in case of escalating conflict in the north.

During his professional tour of the ports, the Director-General received a comprehensive briefing from the ports' managers on their preparedness to handle ships in the event of a missile attack on northern cities and during a blackout scenario, considering the strategic importance of the Ashdod port.

Throughout the visit, the Director-General focused on the ports' energy independence and examined processes related to receiving security assistance from the U.S. He also reviewed the ports' emergency protocols for handling hazardous materials, which are conducted under stringent security measures.

As part of his visit to the Ashdod Port, Ben Zaken also toured the port’s passenger terminal. The Ashdod Port Director-General showcased the process of upgrading the terminal, which will facilitate a fully technological, fast, and efficient passenger handling process.

Director-General of the Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety Moshe Ben Zaken stated: "Today, I visited the Ashdod Port as directed by Transportation Minister Miri Regev. As part of our commitment to keeping Israel's entry points open and functional under all circumstances, Israel's seaports, like our airports, are strategic targets for our enemies but are also vital infrastructure facilities that Israel cannot operate without even for a single day. Therefore, we must ensure a high level of preparedness at the country's strategic transportation hubs, with a focus on energy independence and logistical solutions in any emergency situation."
