The IDF have commenced a comprehensive polio vaccination campaign for soldiers deployed in the Gaza Strip following the discovery of poliovirus remnants in sewage tests across various areas.

In a statement, an IDF spokesperson revealed that the decision to vaccinate was made in consultation with the Ministry of Health, aimed at ensuring the health protection of soldiers and Israeli civilians alike. The vaccinations will be rolled out gradually to all active-duty and reserve forces as part of routine force readiness protocols.

Sources within the IDF disclosed that the administered vaccine is of the inactivated type, with soldiers who have not received previous vaccinations slated to receive two doses. Notably, the decision to decline vaccination will not result in compulsory administration.

Beyond vaccinations, soldiers have been instructed to uphold personal hygiene practices. The IDF assesses a minimal risk of infection among soldiers, given their exclusive use of bottled water.

Simultaneously, efforts are underway to deliver vaccinations to the civilian population in Gaza. Since the conflict's onset, approximately 300,000 polio vaccines have been distributed to Gaza, sufficient for over a million residents. Major General Rasan Alian, coordinating governmental efforts in the region, remains in communication with the international community to secure additional vaccine supplies.

Last week, the Ministry of Health advised the IDF to administer booster doses against poliovirus to soldiers in Gaza following its detection in sewage. Laboratory tests conducted domestically indicate a heightened incidence of infection in Gaza.

Additionally, the Ministry recommended that IDF personnel stationed in Gaza practice thorough hand washing with soap and water for at least 15 seconds upon leaving restroom facilities, before handling or consuming food, and before entering rest areas. Soldiers were also advised to clean footwear of debris and wipe them with a damp cloth before entering rest areas, along with changing uniforms when departing Gaza for Israel.

This vaccination campaign underscores proactive measures taken by Israeli authorities to safeguard public health amidst ongoing regional challenges.
