Senior Defense Official: Stage 2 of IDF fighting in Gaza is over
The IDF will shift its focus to controlling strategic routes and will also conduct targeted raids in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has concluded the intensive phase of its military operation in Gaza and is transitioning to a new stage of the conflict, a senior defense official told Channel 14 News today (Sunday).
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the IDF will now focus on controlling strategic routes and conducting targeted raids in the Gaza Strip. This marks the beginning of the war's third phase, which could last for several years.
Key points of the new strategy include:
• Maintaining a broad IDF presence in several areas of Gaza
• Controlling the Philadelphi Corridor and Netzarim Route
• Conducting targeted air and ground raids based on intelligence
• Intensifying efforts to eliminate Hamas leaders and their aides
The shift comes as discussions continue about a possible deal with Hamas for the release of hostages and prisoners. With the potential for restrictions on military operations in Gaza, the defense establishment is reportedly working to eliminate as many terrorists and damage as much terrorist infrastructure as possible in the remaining time.
This development follows Prime Minister Netanyahu's recent mentions of a third phase, although there has been no official announcement from the political or defense establishment.
The news comes a day after the IDF reported a major operation targeting Hamas military leader Mohammad Deif and his deputy, Rafah Salameh. The strike, which took place near Khan Yunis, reportedly resulted in dozens of casualties. While Israeli assessments suggest Deif's assassination was successful, Hamas has denied these claims.
