The Israeli Border Guards Unit is reporting a significant uptick in security incidents along the West Bank-Jerusalem border. Deputy Moran Buchnik of the Erez Platoon command reveals a stark increase in apprehensions at checkpoints, from about 500 per month before October 7 to approximately 2,000 now.
"While the focus is on the fighting in the north and south, we're feeling the pressure on Palestinian territory," Buchnik explains. The surge includes attempts at weapons smuggling, forgery, and various infiltration tactics.
The reasons behind this escalation are multifaceted. Economic hardship due to work restrictions in Israel, incitement within Palestinian Authority areas related to events in Gaza and northern Israel, and the activities of small groups with hostile intentions all contribute to the tension.
Buchnik notes a shift in behavior patterns at crossings, with more Palestinians using deceptive tactics to enter Israel. This change has led to increased friction and frustration at checkpoints.
As the conflict in Gaza continues, Israeli security forces anticipate further increases in breach attempts from the West Bank. The Border Guards have responded by intensifying patrols and heightened vigilance.
