In a tragic development, a 26-year-old man from central Israel has succumbed to Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the "brain-eating amoeba." This rare infection, found in warm freshwater sources worldwide, has resulted in approximately 400 reported cases globally. Despite intensive medical efforts at Beilinson Hospital, doctors were unable to save the patient, highlighting the severe nature of this disease.
The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation, suspecting the young man contracted the amoeba at Gaia beach. Environmental health teams are currently on site, inspecting and sampling water sources to prevent further infections.
This marks the second recorded case in Israel, with the first instance discovered in August 2022 at Poria Hospital, which also ended tragically.
Naegleria fowleri thrives in temperatures ranging from 35 to 42 degrees Celsius in freshwater bodies such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. The amoeba enters the body through the nasal passages, typically during activities like swimming or diving. Once inside, it travels to the brain, causing rapid neurological deterioration and, in many cases, death.
