Recent statements from Iranian officials have ratcheted up concerns, prompting Israeli military experts to call for a nuanced approach to security challenges.

Maj.-Gen. (ret.) Gadi Shamni, a former high-ranking IDF officer, warns against underestimating the Iranian threat. "The IDF and the State of Israel should take things seriously," Shamni told 103FM radio, emphasizing the need for clear policy formulation in both Lebanon and Gaza.

The retired general highlights the critical importance of U.S. support, noting that the growing gaps between Israel and its key ally could pose significant challenges. "Without the United States behind us, it will be very difficult," he states, pointing to the evolving dynamics since the outbreak of the current conflict.

Shamni advocates for a multi-pronged strategy to address the Hezbollah threat in Lebanon, calling for the enforcement of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He criticizes past inaction, suggesting that Israel's reluctance to respond to violations has emboldened Hezbollah over the years.

On the Gaza front, Shamni acknowledges the IDF's current tactical advantages but recognizes the limitations of the ongoing military campaign. He stresses the need for a comprehensive approach, potentially involving increased cooperation with the United States to fully achieve Israel's objectives in the Palestinian enclave.

The general also touches on internal Israeli politics, defending IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi against recent criticism and emphasizing the importance of maintaining a professional military leadership.

Looking ahead, Shamni calls for the conscription of ultra-Orthodox citizens into the IDF, arguing that the evolving threat landscape necessitates a broader base of military service.
