Attorney General and State Attorney: ICC has no authority to investigate Israel; warrants request "baseless"

Following the decision of ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan to file for warrants against Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant, the leaders of Israel's justice system clarified that they are responsible for investigating alleged crimes during war, not the ICC.

In response to the ICC Prosecutor's decision to file for warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant for war crimes, the Attorney General and State Attorney issued a statement today (Wednesday) repudiating the ICC's authority to do so.

The statement said that Israel set out to a war that was "forced on it" on October 7, and that "the security forces, including the IDF, fight based on complete commitment to the rules of international law."

They further clarified that "the Attorney General and the State Attorney of the State of Israel thoroughly examine every serious claim of a violation of law by any of the bodies of the State of Israel, and enforce the law."

They ended by saying that "as the State of Israel has clarified over the years, the (International Criminal) court lacks any authority to conduct an investigation on the matter. In any event, the request in the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants against the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister is baseless."
