Change of heart at Shas? The clarification letter of the Head of Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah on the draft

The leader of the Shas Religious Council issued a letter clarifying that negotiations regarding the draft of yeshivah students are with their approval.

Following the letter of Charedi Sefardi Rabbis openly opposing any draft law which drafts Charedim, a clarification letter was published today (Thursday) in the Shas paper Haderech, in which Rabbi Moshe Mayah backed the efforts to find a compromise.

This is a clear, handwritten "expression of views" by the man considered the elder of the party's Torah Sages Council regarding efforts to both pass a draft law and maintain the status of the yeshivah students, where he stressed that "all the negotiations taking place are according to the instructions of the Torah Sages Council."

Since Rabbi Mayah ostensibly also signed the original letter condemning any compromise, this is a complete disavowal of that stance, raising the question of whether his signature was forged or perhaps he didn't understand what he was signing and is now recanting.
