According to a number of reports, the conversation between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Biden was much less tense than previous ones, with both leaders doing their best to lower the temperature.
According to reports from the White House and other sources, the most recent conversation between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Biden was much calmer than previous ones. Tones remained friendly, and the effort of both leaders to bridge the gaps between the two countries were readily apparent.
The conflict between the two governments had recently reached a nadir, with the call of Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for new elections in Israel, and effectively for Netanyahu’s removal, a blatant intervention in Israel’s democracy which was condemned across the political spectrum.
American networks reported that both leaders are trying to clear the air. This includes Prime Minister Netanyahu sending a security team to Washington to discuss America’s fears about a Rafah operation, while President Biden promised Netanyahu that he is not trying to depose him and will not intervene in Israeli internal politics.
Schumer also clarified his statement, saying that Israel is a democracy and its people chooses its leaders, and that the United States will have no hand in the matter.
This may be an attempt to turn a new leaf in the US-Israel relations, which has seen its share of crises these last few months, or a last ditch effort before relations fall apart.
