Likud party disavows responsibility for Meron Disaster

The Likud party has officially responded to the State Commission of Inquiry's report on the Meron disaster, which held then-Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Public Security Minister Amir Ohana personally responsible, by calling it "political."

The Likud party officially responded to the State Commission of Inquiry’s report on the Meron Disaster, which attributed personal responsibility for the incident to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and then-Public Security Minister Amir Ohana.

The party started by addressing the enormity of the event: “the Meron Disaster is a tragic disaster. Our hearts are with the families of the victims. In practice, the government has already implemented the natural conclusions and the last event at Meron took place with a large crowd and without a hitch. The government will examine the need to learn additional operative lessons to prevent the recurrence of such a disaster.”

“This is clearly an entirely political provocation”

The party later accused the previous, non-Likud led government for the commission’s personal recommendations against the Likud leader: “However, we are sorry that for the first time in the history of the state, the government led by Bennet formed a commission of inquiry against its predecessor on the political right, whose central member was a close friend of Lapid, Shlomo Yannai, who received an offer from him for a spot on the Yesh Atid list for the Knesset. This is clearly an entirely political provocation.”

“Lapid’s cynical and deliberate effort to turn the Meron Disaster into a political battering ram – won’t succeed,” they concluded.
