The evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians from the fronts in the south and north and the temporary shuttering of a number of Population Registry offices has led the Interior Ministry to submit a law proposal allowing Israeli citizens to renew their IDs and passports via the internet, according to Walla News.

The law proposal, if it passes, is a temporary order applicable for the coming half a year, with a possible extension for another half a year.

This renewal is only possible subject to a number of conditions:

  • the owner of the ID or passport is an adult
  • the ID or passport to be renewed must have either expired in the last half a year or is set to expire this coming year
  • the ID or passport is biometric
  • the owner of the ID or passport must be present in the country and cannot renew it from abroad

Furthermore, an ID or passport ordered in this fashion will only be good for five years instead of the usual ten.
