A student at the school in Modiin collapsed (Wednesday) this morning during sports class after suffering cardiac arrest. His classmate Guy Alon, who was with him at the time, began performing CPR operations here, which included the use of a device (a defibrillator) until the student's heart started beating again and he regained full consciousness. Later, the boy was taken to the Sheba Tel HaShomer hospital in an intensive care unit.
Guy Alon, the friend who saved the boy, said: "While running in sports class, I saw a commotion tens of meters away from me. I immediately arrived at the scene and saw my classmate lying on the field unconscious. I performed medical tests as I learned in the MDA course and realized that he was without a pulse and not breathing. We called MDA's 101 hotline. At the same time as the intensive care unit was called, I started performing CPR with the telephone support of the medic at the hotline."
CPR and the importance of the defibrillator - the difference between life and death
Guy is a MDA volunteer and the knowledge he possesses helped save his friend's life. "I knew every second here was critical and that he should receive an electric shock from a device. From my acquaintance with the school where I study, I knew that there was a device a few tens of meters away at the entrance to the hall. I connected the device and gave an electric shock."
He also added that "I continued with the resuscitation operations and after a nerve-wracking minute I felt that the pulse returned and my classmate regained consciousness. The MDA intensive care unit team that arrived continued the medical treatment and evacuated him to the hospital when he was fully conscious and accompanied by a family member who arrived on the scene. The simple actions of how to perform CPR and the importance of the shock device is something that everyone should know - it's the difference between life and death and thanks to this knowledge I saved a life today!"
