Israel-Gaza War, Hamas

How the Gaza-Egypt Border Became Hamas' Weapons Highway

The discovery of enormous caches of arms in Gaza which could only have come via smuggling across the border has increased the IDF's need to take control of it.

As the war in Gaza continues, the IDF continues to be stunned at the sheer number of weapons - guns, explosives, rockets, missiles - which they have found in practically every building thanks to massive smuggling via Egypt, according to Walla News correspondent Amir Bohbot.

This massive arsenal disproves the IDF's previous belief that previous rounds had greatly eroded Hamas' war-making, and demonstrates just how much work the IDF has to monitor the access points into the Gaza Strip by land and sea in order to prevent a recurrence.

According to an IDF officer involved in the fighting, the number of weapons is so great, that pretty much every building contains arms, allowing terrorists to move from building to building appearing as non-combatants, since weapons are waiting for them everywhere, so no need to carry them.

As one officer put it: "The scope of explosives and anti-tank missiles used against us are on a scale reminiscent of the global Jihad organizations in Syria and Iraq."

The weapons reportedly could only come via land through smuggling across the Gaza-Egyptian border, as well as by sea, and IDF Southern Command has been working on plans to help better monitor the border there. Egypt has warned the IDF not to act too aggressively so as not to lead to a Palestinian exodus or pressure on the border, and the two countries are reportedly trying to set up a joint mechanism to secure it.
