Why the IDF kept key Hamas kidnapper's death a secret – until now
This image struck fear and outrage into all of our hearts. It definitely brings a measure of comfort to know that he was elminated.

Israeli security officials have revealed that Mohammad Abu Said, the Hamas terrorist captured on video violently kidnapping 19-year-old IDF observer Naama Levy during the October 7 attacks, was eliminated four months ago. This information was kept classified until today to protect the safety of hostage negotiations for five female military observers.
The haunting footage of Levy's abduction from the Nahal Oz military base became one of the most disturbing symbols of the October 7 attacks. The video showed the Ra'anana native being dragged from a jeep with her hands bound, her clothing visibly bloodstained - an image that would later become emblematic of the attacks' brutality, particularly against women.
Abu Said's involvement in one of the most widely circulated videos from October 7 made him a high-priority target. While security officials have now confirmed his elimination, they strategically delayed this announcement until after the successful release of all five female military observers who were taken captive that day.
Levy's case gained international attention, with her parents Yoni Levy and Ayelet Levy Shachar becoming prominent voices in the campaign for hostage release. Their advocacy helped keep international focus on the plight of the hostages, particularly highlighting concerns about gender-based violence during the attacks.
After 477 days in captivity, Levy was finally freed on January 25, 2025, as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The confirmation of Abu Said's elimination comes as Israeli forces continue their operations against those responsible for the October 7 attacks.
Security officials emphasized that the timing of this announcement was carefully calculated to ensure the safety of hostage negotiations, demonstrating the complex interplay between military operations and diplomatic efforts to secure the hostages' release.
