Crossing a red line
Avigdor Lieberman calls for Haredi leaders to be jailed! Here's what to know
Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of Yisrael Beytenu, crossed a red line this morning (Wednesday) by calling for the arrest of the Lithuanian leader, Rabbi Dov Lando, and the Rishon LeZion, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, over their calls not to report to draft offices

Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of Yisrael Beytenu and a Knesset member, who had recently appeared to slightly tone down his ongoing opposition incitement against the haredi public and was gaining mandates in polls, crossed a red line this morning (Wednesday) by calling for the arrest of the Lithuanian leader, Rabbi Dov Lando, and the Rishon LeZion, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef.
In a post he published this morning on X, Lieberman wrote: "Rabbi Dov Lando instructed yeshiva students not to report to draft offices. Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef called to tear up the draft notice and throw it in the toilet. Meanwhile, dozens of protests and calls for draft dodging are taking place everywhere."
Lieberman quotes the law, writing: "According to Section 109(a) of the Penal Law (1977) and Amendment 125(d) (2016): Incitement to draft dodging is a criminal offense, punishable by 5 years in prison—and during wartime, up to 15 years in prison."
"I call on the enforcement authorities," he concluded, "to act according to the law and not shirk from enforcing it."
The chairman of the Interior Committee, MK Yaakov Asher, responded: "I suggest that if the Israel Police encounter difficulties in enforcing this matter, they can utilize the fine services of the KGB organization."
As a reminder, during his tenure as Defense Minister in 2018, Lieberman passed the "Draft Law," which was also supported by members of the opposition party Yesh Atid, while haredi MKs voted against it, after ensuring there was a majority for the law, which passed its first reading with the support of 63 Knesset members.
According to the law approved at that time, when today the haredim can only dream of such a law, if the draft targets were not met, it was stipulated that only economic sanctions would be imposed on yeshiva budgets, not on the yeshiva students themselves, as is happening today.
The draft targets set then spoke of 5%-8% per year, and if the targets were not met for three consecutive years, the law would be repealed.
The strange thing is that Lieberman sought to pass such a lenient and beneficial draft law for the haredim during his role as Defense Minister, but he has now made a complete U-turn, and is actually asking the government to prosecute the head of the Lithuanian Torah world.
It goes without saying that they would never do it, because it would cause massive rioting.
