Jerusalem residents are furious: “Left-wing protests have made our lives unbearable”

Jerusalem residents have launched an initiative against left-wing protests in the city, which they claim “exceed the bounds of legitimate protest,” appealing to Likud MK Dan Illouz.

After a tumultuous week of protests, road blockages, public transportation disruptions, and breaches of public order in Jerusalem, the capital’s residents have had enough and have decided to fight back through the Knesset to stop the chaos plaguing the city.

Following residents’ appeals, Likud MK Dan Illouz, chair of the Jerusalem Lobby and a former Jerusalem City Council member, sent a letter earlier this morning to the chair of the Knesset Interior Committee, MK Yaakov Asher. In the letter, he requested an urgent committee discussion due to the damage to the quality of life of Jerusalem residents caused by recurring protests held regularly in the city.

The letter and the raising of the issue in the Knesset follow a new grassroots initiative. A WhatsApp group called “Jerusalemites Against Protests” was started by several residents of the Rehavia neighborhood, and since then, thousands from central city neighborhoods have joined.

The initiative aims to address the ongoing distress residents have voiced for some time, not just over the constant noise but also the repeated road closures that severely impair movement and disrupt public transportation in the area.

What began as a local coordination tool among neighbors quickly grew into a broader expression of citywide frustration. Members argue that the protests, sometimes held daily right beneath their windows, exceed the limits of legitimate demonstration and have made their lives unbearable.

MK Illouz: “This Is a Routine Disruption of the Lives of Thousands of Residents”In his letter to the Interior Committee chair, MK Illouz, a Jerusalem resident himself, asserts that the city’s residents, especially those in the central areas, face daily disruptions to their routines, including incessant noise, road blockages, and delays in accessing essential services like schools and medical centers.

Illouz wrote: “This is a systematic disruption of the daily lives of thousands of residents. We must distinguish between the freedom to protest, an important democratic right, and anarchy that causes real harm to law-abiding citizens.”

In his letter, MK Illouz requests that representatives of the residents be invited to the Interior Committee discussion, alongside officials from the Jerusalem Municipality, Israel Police, the Interior Ministry, and the Environmental Protection Ministry. “The residents’ voices must be heard, and immediate solutions must be found,” he wrote. Among his proposed measures: reducing noise disturbances, regulating transportation, and exploring alternative protest locations that avoid residential hubs.

Illouz concludes that the call is not about politics but about a fundamental issue of public order and quality of life. “The state’s role is to balance freedom of expression with the right of citizens to peace, security, and a normal life. This isn’t a fight against opinions; it’s a fight for a decent life.”
