Over Dismissal of Shin Bet Chief
Tensions boil over in Jerusalem: Yair Golan is shoved to the ground by a policeman
Protesters weren't deterred by the cold and rain. They converged on Jerusalem, saying, "We’ll shield the gatekeepers with our bodies."

Jerusalem and cities across Israel were gripped by widespread protests on Thursday as demonstrators rallied against the anticipated dismissal of Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, a decision slated for a government vote tonight. Tensions boiled over near the Prime Minister’s residence on Gaza Street, where clashes broke out between security forces and protesters who breached barricades in a bid to approach the building.
The day of action kicked off in the morning when members of the "Civil Rebellion" group blocked Paris Square, snarling traffic in the capital. Police responded by towing vehicles and arresting activists, a day after similar road blockages disrupted the city. By midday, the situation escalated as officers used force to hold back crowds on Gaza Street. A viral video captured a striking moment: Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats Party, was shoved to the ground by a police officer during the melee. Undeterred, Golan stayed on to protest alongside others as tempers flared.
Today’s demonstrations follow a packed schedule. A march from Givat Ram campus, spearheaded by academic activists, launched the morning’s events. At 2:00 PM, a vigil unfolded on Gaza Street, with vehicle convoys from across the country converging on Jerusalem by 6:00 PM to bolster the evening’s efforts. A march to the government compound is set for 7:30 PM, culminating in a major rally at 8:00 PM outside the cabinet meeting.
Protest organizers framed the fight as a critical stand against governmental overreach. "This is an emergency," they declared in a statement. "Firing the head of our investigative system to protect treason suspects is an illegal act by an illegitimate government. We’re here to defend our gatekeepers with our bodies and cars. The ‘Hamas is an asset’ regime wants a messianic dictatorship, but we won’t let it happen." They urged citizens to flood Jerusalem, signaling support for the Attorney General, Shin Bet chief, and Supreme Court justices.
The unrest comes amid a broader wave of demonstrations nationwide, with road blockages and confrontations reflecting deep public unease over the proposed ousting of Bar, a key security figure.
