Stay Indoors: Israel Warns of Hazardous Air Quality from Dust Storm
Unusual health advisory: High air pollution levels across Israel
Israel’s Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental Protection issued a warning about high air pollution levels due to a dust storm from southern Turkey, urging the public to avoid outdoor activities, especially for sensitive groups like the elderly and children. Air quality is expected to improve gradually starting from the evening and into Thursday, April 4.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, has issued an unusual advisory urging the public to stay indoors due to high levels of air pollution across most regions of Israel. The pollution is the result of elevated concentrations of particulate matter in the air, which can pose serious health risks. The situation is expected to improve gradually, with air quality forecasts predicting relief beginning in the evening hours and continuing through Thursday, April 4.
The high air pollution is caused by a weather system originating from southern Turkey, which is pushing dust from Egypt into the region. This dust storm has led to hazardous air conditions across the country, with many areas experiencing reduced visibility and significant pollution levels.
The Ministries of Health and Environmental Protection are particularly concerned for sensitive populations, including individuals with heart and lung conditions, the elderly, pregnant women, and children. These groups are being advised to avoid any strenuous outdoor activities. For the general public, it is recommended to reduce physical exertion outdoors, particularly in areas with the highest pollution levels.
Health experts warn that exposure to high levels of particulate matter can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems, exacerbate pre-existing conditions, and increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory infections. People who experience difficulty breathing or other symptoms should seek medical attention.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation and update the public based on real-time data from air quality monitoring stations across the country. The ministry encourages the public to track air quality levels through the "Air Quality in the Environment" app or visit the official air monitoring website to get the latest updates on pollution levels in different regions.
As air pollution is a growing concern worldwide, such weather phenomena highlight the importance of timely communication and public health guidance to minimize the impact of environmental risks on the population.
