Fake Protest? Majority of Anti-Gov’t Letter Signers Are Not Active Soldiers

IDF exposes truth behind ‘1,000 Pilots’ protest letter - Only 60 are active reservists

A recent protest letter reportedly signed by 1,000 Israeli Air Force reservists has come under scrutiny after the IDF revealed that only a small number were active personnel, and even fewer were actual pilots. The revelation has sparked political backlash, with top officials condemning the letter as harmful during wartime.

The IDF disclosed on Thursday evening that the recently publicized protest letter, signed by 1,000 individuals identifying as pilots or reservists opposing the current Israeli government, is largely unrepresentative of active military personnel. According to the military, only around 60 of the signatories are active reservists, accounting for less than 10% of the total names listed, and of those, only a small fraction are actual pilots.

The protest letter, which made headlines earlier in the day, was framed as a significant expression of dissent from Israel's military aviation community. However, IDF officials clarified that the overwhelming majority of the signatories are either retired from the Israel Defense Forces or have no known service record at all. The revelation has sparked questions about the letter’s credibility and the motivations behind its publication.

Further diminishing the letter’s impact, the IDF revealed that over 40 of the active reservists who initially signed the letter eventually withdrew their support prior to its release. This reversal reportedly followed conversations with IAF commanders and after senior leadership warned that continued association with the protest could lead to dismissal from service.

The government responded swiftly and firmly. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement endorsing Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi’s position on the matter. "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backs the decision by the Defense Minister and the IDF Chief-of-Staff to dismiss those who signed the letter," the statement read. "Refusal to serve is refusal to serve, even if it is implied and expressed in polite language."

Netanyahu emphasized the damaging implications of such protests during an ongoing period of national security concerns. "Expressions that weaken the IDF and strengthen our enemies in wartime are unforgivable," the Prime Minister added.

This latest development underscores the tense relationship between segments of Israeli society and the government, especially amid ongoing political and military challenges. The IDF reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and unity among its ranks while continuing to safeguard national security above all.
