From TV to Reality
Fauda cast meets released hostages who survived Gaza captivity
In a poignant moment, Fauda cast members met with two young women who survived 477 days in Gaza captivity, their harrowing ordeal mirroring a storyline from the show. The emotional encounter highlighted the stark difference between fictional portrayals and the brutal reality faced by hostages.

In an unforgettable moment where television drama collided with real-life horror, members of the Fauda cast met with two young women whose story is more harrowing than any script could depict. Lior Raz (Doron), Yaakov Zada Daniel (Eli), and Rona-Lee Shimon (Nurit) from the popular Israeli series Fauda sat down with Karina Ariev and Naama Levy, two former hostages who spent 477 days in captivity in Gaza. The meeting was made public by Fauda creator Avi Issacharoff, a fluent Arabic speaker and former Middle East analyst who has long worked to blur the lines between fiction and reality.
In a heartfelt post, Issacharoff described the emotional encounter, calling it one of the most moving moments of his career. He shared how the two former hostages (both just 20 years old) became symbols of resilience and courage. Ariev and Levy were among four female soldiers kidnapped during Hamas's attack on the IDF base at Nahal Oz on October 7, 2023. For over a year, they endured brutal captivity in Gaza, moved between tunnels and civilian homes, and forced to cook for their captors. Despite the immense hardships they faced, both women held onto their spirit, and remarkably, their ability to speak Arabic, the language of their captors. The language became not just a tool for survival but also a means of maintaining their connection to each other and their past lives.
Their release came on January 25, 2025, as part of a ceasefire deal in which Israel exchanged 200 Palestinian prisoners for the hostages' freedom. The reunion with their families was broadcast live across Israel, marking the end of their 477-day ordeal. For many, it was a deeply emotional moment, proof of the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable suffering.
What made the meeting even more surreal was that Fauda had previously portrayed a similar scenario. In Season 3, protagonist Doron Kavillio, played by Lior Raz, is captured by Hamas during an undercover mission in Gaza. Like Ariev and Levy, Doron faces brutal treatment during his captivity, offering a stark portrayal of the horrors hostages endure. However, as Raz met Ariev and Levy in real life, it became painfully clear that the truth was much more brutal than anything fiction could depict. Unlike Doron, there was no script, no director, and no rescue mission; just the relentless will to survive.
This meeting served as a poignant reminder of the stark reality behind the Fauda storyline, showing that while television can offer a gripping portrayal of such traumatic events, it can never truly capture the raw human experience of those who have lived through them.
