Katz’s Big Promise: Syrian Workers Headed to Israel Soon

Defense Minister Katz announces Syrian Druze will soon be able to work in Israel

In a significant policy shift, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Sunday, March 9, 2025, that Druze laborers from Syria will soon be permitted to work in the Golan Heights, bolstering ties with the Druze community amid regional tensions.

The decision follows the cabinet’s approval of an unprecedented aid program for Druze and Circassian communities within Israel, spearheaded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Finance Minister. Katz framed the move as part of a broader commitment to support these minority groups, both domestically and across the border.

Speaking on the initiative, Katz emphasized the loyalty and courage of Israel’s Druze and Circassian citizens, particularly their contributions to national security during challenging times. “As Minister of Defense, I salute them for their loyalty and bravery and their contribution to Israel’s security in difficult and decisive times—we will continue to support them and we will defend their brothers in Syria from any threat,” he declared. The inclusion of Syrian Druze laborers in the Golan Heights workforce signals an extension of this solidarity, aiming to provide economic opportunities while reinforcing Israel’s protective stance toward the Druze population in Syria.

Katz reiterated Israel’s resolve to safeguard the Druze in Syria, stating, “We will protect the Druze in Syria—from any threat.” This pledge builds on earlier actions this month when Katz and Netanyahu directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare defenses for Jaramana, a Druze village near Damascus, amid attacks by Syrian government forces. In a joint statement, they warned, “We will not allow the extreme Islamist terror regime in Syria to harm the Druze. If the regime harms the Druze—it will be harmed by us.” The labor initiative and military readiness underscore Israel’s dual approach of economic support and security assurances, reflecting a strategic pivot to strengthen ties with the Druze amid Syria’s instability.
