On Wednesday, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement that includes the release of some hostages. The first stage of the deal promises to return 33 hostages to Israel, but it remains unclear how many of those captives are still alive.
A report from Walla revealed that some families will be devastated to learn that their loved ones were killed during their captivity. Israeli officials have warned that dozens of the hostages could return in the form of corpses, with families both rejoicing over the return of survivors and mourning the loss of those who did not make it.
“According to what we understand, dozens of abductees will return as corpses,” an Israeli official shared. “Alongside the great joy of families who will celebrate with their loved ones after returning from captivity alive, there will be families shattered by this, and we will provide them with the necessary help.”
Officials stressed that for families of those murdered, the return of their loved ones’ remains for a dignified burial will offer some measure of closure. Despite the grief, they are committed to ensuring that all hostages, living or dead, are treated with the utmost respect.
“This is our mission, and we will do our duty to the families,” the official added. “We should expect to see difficult scenes with coffins returned to Israel. It is going to be difficult, but just as we managed on October 7, we will do everything in the most sensitive way and give each kidnapped person the respect they deserve with a dignified burial.”
