Former Defense Minister Yoav Galant announced his resignation from the Knesset this evening (Wednesday) in a statement to the press: "I served the state for 35 years in the IDF, a decade in the government and the Knesset. This is a long station on a path that has not yet been completed. There are moments when one needs to stop and examine the direction of action."
"The path of Likud is my path, I believe in the path of Likud. I halted the judicial reform, I tried to stop the rift among the people. I insisted on continuing the alliance with the United States, there is no substitute for it," said Gallant.
"I warned that the rift during the reform is a clear and immediate danger," claimed the former Minister of Defense, "The actions that occurred during my time exposed every point in Iran to Israeli attack."
Regarding the conscription law, Gallant said: "I understood that drafting the ultra-Orthodox is not just a social issue; it is a necessary security need, and therefore I acted for equal conscription. Because of this, I was removed from my position as Minister of Defense. The Israeli government is pushing a law that contradicts the needs of the IDF and the state. It involves granting exemptions to most ultra-Orthodox youth. I cannot accept this."
Gallant has hardly appeared in the Knesset since the dismissal.
Gallant was dismissed from the position of Minister of Defense after he opposed advancing the conscription law demanded by the ultra-Orthodox parties. In the past two months, he has barely appeared in the Knesset and has not voted with the coalition. In the first month, it was still understandable that he was taking a break after a year and a half of intensity, but now, with Ben Gvir and the ultra-Orthodox performing political maneuvers, his absence forced Netanyahu and Bismuth to come to the Knesset from the hospital and the mourning house.
Yesterday, MK Boaron demanded that Likud declare Gallant as a resigning MK – which would not allow him to run for the next Knesset on an existing list. Therefore, Gallant probably preempted the announcement and declared his resignation from the Knesset, or a kind of political timeout.
Let's remember that the next in line on the Likud list is Abed Afif, who occupies the Druze sector slot at number 43 on the list.
