Hostage deal within arms reach

Defense Minister Israel Katz: "We're Closer Than Ever" to Prisoner Swap Deal with Hamas

Defense Minister Israel Katz has confirmed that Israel is now "closer than ever" to a potential prisoner swap and ceasefire deal with Hamas. Speaking during a meeting of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday, Katz expressed confidence that the agreement on the table has broad support and will move forward.

"We are closer than we ever were," Katz stated. "There will be a vast majority in support of the deal, and it's better to speak less about it for now."

Katz also stressed the importance of securing the return of Israeli hostages, calling it a top priority for his ministry. He emphasized that obstacles like the Philadelphi and Netzarim Corridors, which have been key points of contention, will not hinder the progress of the deal. "There is flexibility from the other side on these issues," Katz noted.

In addition to discussing the potential deal with Hamas, Katz also addressed the ongoing issue of military conscription. He outlined his goal of achieving 50% enlistment from the haredi sector and implementing sanctions on institutions and individuals that fail to comply with the law.

Katz also shared details of a meeting he had with Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara regarding the Draft Law. Katz revealed some tension over the process, stating that after initial disagreements, it was revealed that Baharav-Miara was located in the Justice Minister's office in Tel Aviv. Katz emphasized his intention to pass the law in a respectful manner, despite the challenges. "I want to pass a Draft Law in a respectful manner," he said.
