The latest Marvel Studios film "Captain America: Brave New World" faces mounting regional challenges as Lebanese BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) activists claim to have successfully lobbied for the film's ban in Lebanon. The controversy centers on Israeli actress Shira Haas's role as Ruth Bat-Seraph, a character whose identity has undergone significant changes during production.

Marvel Studios significantly altered the character's background from her comic book origins. Originally conceived as an Israeli Mossad agent, the character has been reimagined as a former Russian spy for the film, marking a substantial departure from the source material. Despite these changes, the casting of Haas, known for her Emmy-nominated work in "Unorthodox," continues to generate debate.

According to Variety, Sabra is still Israeli, but now she is a former Black Widow ... reworking the character for “Captain America: Brave New World” had little to do with backlash and more to do with ensuring the superhero fit more seamlessly into the film universe that’s already been created."

The film's Hollywood premiere on February 11, 2025, was marked by protests outside the Chinese Theatre, with demonstrators carrying signs reading "Disney supports genocide" and chanting "Free Palestine." The controversy has now extended to Lebanon, where activists claim to have secured a nationwide ban through the Ministry of Economy, though official confirmation remains pending.

Lebanon has previously banned films featuring Israeli actors, most notably "Wonder Woman" starring Gal Gadot in 2017. This latest development, if confirmed, would align with the country's historical stance on media featuring Israeli talent or content.

Marvel's decision to modify the character's background appears to have been an attempt to navigate regional sensitivities, though these changes have not prevented controversy. The film, released in the United States on February 14, 2025, represents a significant moment for both the franchise and Haas, who becomes one of the few Israeli actors to join the superhero genre.
