When it comes to Harry Potter, Woke won't work

Snape Is BLACK In The New Harry Potter TV series - and the fans are furious

When will Hollywood learn that woke is not always (or ever) the best factor in casting choices?

HBO's upcoming "Harry Potter" reboot has landed in hot water before a single spell has been cast. The network is facing intense backlash following reports that British actor Paapa Essiedu is in talks to play Severus Snape, the complex potions master made famous by Alan Rickman.

The news, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, comes as HBO ramps up casting for its ambitious television adaptation of J.K. Rowling's wizarding world. While the network has reportedly seen over 32,000 child actors for various roles, it's the potential adult casting choices that have set social media ablaze.

"You can't just swap out character designs like it's a video game," one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), while another argued, "Some characters are so iconic, changing them feels like rewriting history."

The debate has quickly spiraled into a larger discussion about adaptation, representation, and franchise loyalty.

Essiedu, critically acclaimed for his work in "I May Destroy You" and "The Lazarus Project," hasn't confirmed his involvement. Sources close to the production say negotiations are ongoing. Meanwhile, Jewish-English actor Brett Goldstein ("Ted Lasso") is reportedly in talks to take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, originally played by Robbie Coltrane.

The controversy highlights HBO's broader challenge: how to refresh a beloved franchise while respecting its legacy. The network has remained tight-lipped about specific casting decisions, stating only that they're "committed to bringing a fresh perspective to the wizarding world while honoring its core themes and characters."

HBO is walking into a minefield here: The original cast isn't just beloved - for an entire generation, they are these characters. Rickman is Snape. Coltrane is Hagrid. Any change, regardless of merit, was going to cause an uproar.

Some might say that Essiedu has the gravitas and complexity to make Snape his own – but it's going to make a lot of Harry Potter diehard fans furious. It has already, even before there is any kind of official confirmation.

As Youtuber Ryan Kinel pointed out, "The books are beloved by millions of people around the entire world, and there is no reason to change them, period. It's that simple ... I can't wait for the storyline where James and Sirius, the reason they bullied Snape was because he was black ... Oh, well, maybe they'll make the Weasleys black. Yeah, go ahead. Make the poorest family, notoriously the poorest family in the Wizarding World black. For representation's sake."

You can almost feel his fury.

HBO is expected to make official casting announcements in early 2025. The series is slated to begin production later that year.

For their sakes, as well as for our own, we hope that they listen to what the fans are telling them.
