Arrogant and immature

Jonah Platt rips into Rachel Zegler after she tanks Snow White: "Narcissism is not something to be coddled"

Disney’s $270 million remake just can't get a break, largely because of Rachel Zegler's strange antics.

Disney’s live-action Snow White remake, starring Rachel Zegler, continues to face turbulence following a lackluster $87 million opening weekend against its $270 million budget. The film, already mired in controversy, has now been linked to another high-profile scandal as Zegler gains public support from Melissa Barrera, the former Scream actress fired over her own contentious remarks.

Zegler, 23, has been a lightning rod for criticism since 2022, when she told Extra she found the original 1937 film’s storyline “problematic,” dismissing its focus on a “love story with the guy who literally stalks her” as “weird, weird.” She promised a “different approach,” scrapping the romance entirely. She also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she was “scared” of the classic cartoon as a child and had only watched it once, raising eyebrows about her connection to the source material.

If that isn't bad enough, she then got busy on social media.

Her posts, including an unnecessary “Free Palestine” message and bitter criticism of Donald Trump, sparked concern at Disney.

Page Six reporting that executives struggled to rein her in. “She’s an outspoken 20-something, and Disney chiefs have called her directly and asked her to tone down her posts,” a source claimed, adding that her management was contacted, but “she won’t listen.”

Producer Marc Platt reportedly flew to New York to address the issue, a move his son Jonah defended yesterday in a now-deleted Instagram post, noting his father “had to leave his family to reprimand his 20-year-old employee.”

As if it isn't bad enough already, it just keeps getting worse.

Reports have surfaced that Disney was forced to hire expensive security guards for Gadot and her daughters after they received death threats as a result of Zegler's actions.

According to DailyMail.com, Zegler has been backed by Melissa Barrera, who was fired from the Scream franchise in November 2023 after labeling the Israel-Palestine conflict “genocide and ethnic cleansing” on her Instagram story.

Barrera reshared a post defending Zegler, stating, “Disney is scapegoating Rachel Zegler for the failure of Snow White because she spoke up for Palestinians. She deserves better.” The post praised Zegler as “cool as hell and full of integrity,” citing a Variety report that alleged her political posts triggered death threats against co-star Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen and is a vocal supporter of Israel.

The two actresses have largely conducted press separately, fueling rumors of on-set tension.

Rachl Zegler is a huge part of the reason Snow White is floopping so stupendously, but let's be honest: She's not the only reason.

In January 2024, actor Peter Dinklage, who has achondroplasia, criticized Disney on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast, calling their approach to the seven dwarves 'contradictory'. “You’re proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’” he said. “You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave. What are you doing, man?” Disney responded by reimagining the characters as “magical creatures” of diverse sizes and genders, sidelining dwarf actors—a move that further alienated fans.

Zegler’s pre-release confidence (“People will line up to see me)” hasn’t panned out. The film earned just $3.5 million in Thursday previews and $43 million over its opening weekend, per DailyMail.com, lagging far behind Disney’s 2023 Little Mermaid remake, which debuted with $95 million.

Disney executives are reportedly reviewing the Snow White fallout, with Zegler’s outspokenness, the dwarf controversy, and now her association with Barrera adding layers to an already troubled production. Whether the film can recover remains uncertain as the spotlight intensifies on its embattled star.
