Tensions between Egypt and Israel have reached alarming levels, with experts warning of the potential for a military clash along the Rafah border. Dalia Ziada, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, addressed the growing strain between the two nations, highlighting the military buildup on both sides of the Egyptian-Israeli border. "Military forces are standing on both sides, aiming at each other, which indicates that the problem of mistrust between the parties has reached a boiling point," Ziada said. She expressed concern that this rising tension could escalate in the coming years, further destabilizing the region.

Ziada's critique of Egypt's stance on the conflict is sharp, accusing the Egyptian government of being on the wrong side of the ongoing war in the Middle East. She specifically pointed to Egypt’s alleged support of Hamas, an organization she claims has caused more harm to Palestinians than any other actor. This critique of Egyptian foreign policy highlights the broader regional dynamics, where alliances and political alignments are constantly shifting.

The discussion also touched on the geopolitical competition between the United States and Europe in the Middle East. Ziada noted French President Emmanuel Macron's recent visit to Egypt, describing it as part of a larger power struggle between the two global powers. "France is trying to emphasize that its presence and influence in the Middle East are still strong, unlike those of the United States, especially in light of Macron's recent success in brokering a ceasefire in Lebanon," she explained. This move by France underscores the continuing strategic importance of the region, particularly as both powers seek to maintain their influence.

Furthermore, Ziada drew attention to the growing economic ties between Egypt and France, which are marked by significant arms deals. Egypt was the largest importer of French weapons between 2012 and 2021, and in 2021, Egypt signed a deal with France to purchase 30 French-made fighter jets worth $4.5 billion. These transactions highlight the intricate web of economic and military interests that shape Egypt's relationships with both regional and global powers, further complicating the already tense situation in the Middle East.

As tensions between Egypt and Israel continue to rise, experts are closely monitoring the developments, fearing that any spark could ignite a dangerous escalation with broader implications for regional security.
