A rabbi from Agoura Hills, California, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was struck and killed by a car near the gas pumps of a Costco in Camarillo.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the parking lot at about 8:37 p.m. Tuesday after a report that a man had been hit by a vehicle. The store is still under construction and hasn’t opened yet. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Court records identify him as Nicholas Lang, 28, of Modesto.
When deputies arrived, witnesses pointed them to the driver, who was still sitting in his car nearby. He was identified as Abba Bryski, 35, and detained at the scene. Jail records list his occupation as “Educator/Rabbi.”
Bryski was booked into Ventura County Jail early Wednesday. He faces two charges: murder, and resisting or obstructing an officer. He is being held on $3 million bail.
Police have not said what led up to the incident. Detectives from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau are investigating Lang’s death as a homicide, and an autopsy is pending to determine the cause and manner of death.
