Israel’s Sephardi Chief Rabbi, Rabbi David Yosef, released a special message this evening (Wednesday) ahead of the Purim holiday, warning against the use of firecrackers and various explosive materials. The rabbi emphasized that, beyond the obvious danger they pose to human life, their use should especially be avoided this year due to the security situation and its implications.

In his message to the public, the rabbi noted that the Torah commands, “You shall diligently guard your lives,” and it is incumbent upon every individual to avoid unnecessary risks. He stated that the use of firecrackers not only presents a real physical danger but also contributes to escalating tensions during an already fraught time.

State authorities issue annual warnings against the use of dangerous materials during Purim celebrations, which can lead to severe injuries. The rabbi’s call aligns with those of security and rescue officials, who urge the public to refrain from using firecrackers, fireworks, or any other explosive materials.

“The Purim holiday is a time of joy and unity,” Rabbi Yosef concluded, “and we must ensure it is celebrated in safe ways, without unnecessary danger.”

Ihud Hatzalah has also called on children and those young at heart to avoid playing with firecrackers, as those suffering from post-trauma from October 7 or from battle fatigue from the war or previous stints in combat.
