A Colorado high school is under fire after its basketball coach allegedly hung a Palestinian flag during a game against a Jewish school and refused to shake hands with the opposing coaches.

The boys' basketball matchup between Lotus School for Excellence and Denver Academy of Torah (DAT) last Wednesday drew accusations of antisemitism, particularly over the refusal to shake hands postgame, according to Brandon Rattiner of the Jewish Community Relations Council.

Rattiner, speaking on behalf of DAT, called the incident deeply disappointing. “Everyone in the Jewish community is acutely aware of the rise in antisemitism since October 7,” he said, referring to Hamas’ terror attack on Israel.

“We've seen it in schools across the country, and this is just the latest example,” Rattiner added. Witnesses at the game reported that a Palestinian flag was draped over the rafters and that the Lotus coach refused to engage with DAT's Jewish coaches and players.

“The issue here is when a coach refuses to interact with a Jewish coach and Jewish students solely because they are Jewish, or holds them personally responsible for a conflict thousands of miles away,” Rattiner told The Post.

“Holding Jewish people accountable for Israel’s actions is a textbook form of antisemitism,” he emphasized.

Following the game, the Lotus coach—identified only as “Coach O” by CBS Colorado—was suspended for displaying the flag, according to Lotus Secondary Principal Ermek Bakyt.

“As a public charter school, Lotus School for Excellence does not encourage or tolerate the display of any political or religious symbols,” Bakyt said in a statement.

An assistant coach was also suspended in connection with the incident, school leaders confirmed.
