Police in Sydney announced that they had located explosives that were apparently intended for an attack on a synagogue in the city.
The explosives were supposed to create a blast wave of 40 meters. Notes were found alongside the explosives indicating that the target was the synagogue.
The media in the country were stunned to find out that the explosives were found nine days ago, and the police did not see fit to update about it until there were press leaks.
The country's deputy police commissioner said that "this is an ongoing investigation and it is being taken seriously - all directions of the investigation are being examined."
Last week, it was reported in Australia that police were looking into the possibility that foreign elements were involved in anti-Semitic attacks on Jews in the country.
Reese Kershaw, Australia's Federal Police Commissioner, met with police chiefs to discuss the rise in antisemitism since October 7, 2023. "We believe that local criminals have been hired to carry out some attacks," Kershaw said in a statement in the capital city of Canberra.
Kershaw added that 15 anti-Semitic incidents are being investigated that were suspected of being carried out with the involvement of the same foreign entity.
