London Metropolitan Police have arrested more than two dozen individuals after pro-Palestine protestors defied orders to avoid the BBC and central London synagogues during a controversial march.
The demonstration, which included participants carrying placards displaying swastikas and antisemitic tropes, went ahead despite restrictions imposed by police on its location.
Organized by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the march violated a mandate barring entry into an area encompassing the BBC’s New Broadcasting House and the nearby Central Synagogue, where services were being held throughout the day.
Of the approximately 5,000 demonstrators, a few hundred attempted to push through police barriers. While many were stopped by rows of officers and vehicles, a group managed to breach the line and were subsequently contained by a second blockade at the northwest corner of Trafalgar Square.
At around 5:00 PM, 30 minutes after the protest was set to conclude, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement: “Around 20 to 30 people who breached the conditions are still contained in Trafalgar Square. They are being arrested. Others have already been arrested.”
