Rabbi Mordechai Weber, a respected leader in Montreal's Belz Hasidic community, passed away Thursday following a prolonged illness. He was 37.
Weber, who managed the Belz community's religious study centers in Montreal, was known for his exceptional dedication to community service and hospitality. He was the son of Rabbi Eliezer Chaim Weber, a prominent religious scholar who heads the Torah V'Emunah Yeshiva in Jerusalem, and son-in-law of Rabbi Rafael Herzog, a major philanthropist within the Belz Hasidic movement.
Throughout his life, Weber maintained close relationships with visiting religious leaders, often hosting them at his father-in-law's home.
Weber had previously battled serious illness several years ago and appeared to have recovered, but recently suffered a relapse. Despite the prayers and hopes of his community, he succumbed to his illness on Thursday.
A funeral service was held at Montreal's Beis Yaakov synagogue, followed by additional prayers at the Kollel Tiferes Yaakov Yitzchok. A second service took place yesterday (Friday) in Monsey, New York, before Weber's remains are transported to Israel for burial on Sunday evening at Jerusalem's Har Hamenuchot cemetery.
Weber is survived by his wife, who remained by his side throughout his illness, their young children, and extended family.
The Belz community, one of the largest Hasidic groups worldwide, mourns the loss of a leader who dedicated his life to religious education and community service.
