A hiker trapped on ice with a broken ankle was rescued from Harriman State Park early Sunday morning thanks to a rapid response from Chaverim of Rockland, a Jewish volunteer emergency services organization.
The rescue teams worked alongside New York State Forest Rangers and Park Police to reach the injured hiker, who had been stranded on an ice sheet in freezing conditions. The Chaverim volunteers, using specialized equipment including a hiking stretcher, stabilized the victim's injury and provided warming measures before carefully navigating the treacherous terrain to safety.
Rockland Hatzalah ambulance service - another Jewish volunteer emergency medical organization - transported the hiker to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment.
"This rescue showcases how community volunteer groups work seamlessly with state emergency services to save lives," said [rescue coordinator name]. "When someone's hurt in these parks, every minute counts, especially in winter conditions."
The incident prompts safety reminders for winter hikers:
- Check weather and trail conditions before heading out
- Wear appropriate footwear with good traction
- Carry emergency communications equipment
- Hike with partners when possible
- Stay on marked trails
