Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the opposition in Canada and most likely the next prime minister, marked the lighting of the first candle of Hanukkah with the Jewish community and in the joint presence of Canadian and Israeli flags side by side – and sent a strong message of support for the Jewish people and the State of Israel – with a particularly Zionist speech.
"Here in Canada and around the world, as we enter the Festival of Lights, we remember the amazing, heroic and miraculous victory of the Maccabees over the Greco-Seleucid Empire, in defense of freedom, freedom for Jews, freedom for all, freedom everywhere," the opposition leader began his remarks.
"So the Maccabees were completely alone, today the Jewish people have friends, you have friends all over the world who wish you success, friends who join you in lighting the menorah, friends who join you arm in arm to move forward towards peace, security and freedom, this beautiful and bright future is ahead of us," he continued.
In conclusion, Polyab, who is expected to be the next prime minister according to the current polls, concluded: "I join you today, with a spirit of optimism and friendship, and a heartfelt Happy holiday, Happy Hanukkah!"
