For over six months, the Jewish community in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, sought answers about the fate of David Strober, a beloved community member and soldier who disappeared during the Ukraine war. Strober, an exceptional student at the local Jewish school, Or Avner - Chabad, was remembered as a role model for his talent, diligence, and unwavering dedication.
"David was a role model," shared Rabbi Shaul Horowitz, the city’s rabbi and Chabad emissary. "As a child, his talent and commitment to learning stood out. When war broke out, he enlisted out of a deep sense of mission." Strober trained as a soldier in several European countries and strived for excellence even in the harshest conditions.
On April 23, Strober spoke with his father for the last time, describing the grim reality on the front lines: "We are being bombed very heavily." Shortly afterward, contact was lost. His family, along with community leaders, launched a relentless search, reaching out to officials for months but receiving no clear answers.
This week, their fears were confirmed. A DNA test identified Strober’s body, found in a minefield on occupied territory where he had lain for months.
On Friday afternoon, the community gathered to bid farewell to Strober in a deeply emotional funeral. Prayers were recited, Kaddish was said, and tearful family members shared heartfelt memories of his life.
"David was a brilliant student, a brave soldier, and a symbol of resilience and determination," Rabbi Horowitz concluded. "His memory will forever be with us. May he rest in peace."
