Jews in New Jersey are up in arms because Tenaeck High School has put up a poster to mark ‘World Keffiyeh Day’ showing a keffiyeh over an outline of Israel’s map.
US board of education member Dr. Kirschenbaum said, "I find it to be incendiary [and] inappropriate. I also find this is the third time that this kind of hatred has come through in the district. I have no problem with World Keffiyeh Day, but I do have a problem when the poster shows World Keffiyeh Day with the outline of the map of Israel. It certainly indicates hatred. That poster indicates genocide.”
However, an incumbent for the Teaneck Board of Education, Jonathan Rodrigues disagreed saying, “There’s no call for violence or hatred here. If this is offensive, maybe it’s time to ask why that is. I think that if you felt offended by something that didn’t call you out personally, didn’t call the Jewish people out personally at all, read the words on the page and trust what the students have told us. Because all I see is somebody who’s personally offended and who needs to check their bias.”
