The Weekly Torah Portion, Parshat Vayishlach, is the eighth parashah of the book of Genesis. Its name is taken from the first word in the parashah: "And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom," (Genesis 32:3).
The Parashah covers a period of 23 years: from the date of the meeting between Jacob and Esau when Jacob returned from Haran in the year of Isaac's death. According to Rashi, the sale of Joseph, which appears in the next parashah, Parashat Vayeshev, took place 12 years before the death of Isaac mentioned in the parashah, (35:29) and from this, it follows that there is an overlap of 12 years between the Parashot, that is, between the Joseph's sale to Isaac's death. There are 154 verses in Parshat Vayishlach, 1976 words, and 7458 letters.
