The Democratic minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, again intervened in Israeli politics last evening (Wednesday) when he echoed Benny Gantz's call for early elections.
Schumer tweeted on his X account: "When a leading member of Israel's war cabinet calls for early elections and over 70% of the population in Israel agrees, according to polls, you know it's the right thing to do."
This is not the first time Schumer has interfered in Israeli politics. As you may recall, last month, he gave a Senate speech calling for snap elections based on the claim that Prime Minister Netanyahu has "lost his way."
"I have known Netanyahu for a long time. We had our differences, but I will always respect the great courage he had as a warrior on the battlefield," Schumer said. "I believe that Israel's security is a top priority in his heart - but I also believe that Netanyahu has lost his way when his political survival is allowed to become more important than Israel's national interests."
After an uproar following his speech, Schumer clarified that the US would not interfere in Israel's affairs, but called on the Israeli public to "discuss the future." "The US will not be able to determine the results of the elections. It is up to the decision of the Israeli public," said Schumer. "As a democratic country, Israel has the right to choose its leaders. But the important thing is that the Israelis will be given a choice. We need to have a new discussion about the future."
