Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar began a wide-ranging interview with the Jerusalem Post, which was published yesterday (Saturday) by emphasizing that President-elect Donald Trump's upcoming second term is an "opportunity" for Israel.

Sa'ar said that the two administrations saw eye-to-eye on the Iranian threat, and that actions taken during Trump's first term such as recognition of Israeli control of the Golan Heights and the moving of the US Embassy to Jerusalem were part of why the Israeli government was optimistic about the next four years.

Regarding inevitable disagreements with the incoming administration, Sa'ar said that "You can’t expect to always get exactly what you want, but flexibility is essential in diplomacy."

Sa'ar also made a point of saying that the Syrian rebel government is a "gang, not a legitimate government," and "they are Islamists with a highly extreme worldview." This was the main motivator for Israel to destroy as much of Bashar Assad's arsenal as it could and why the IDF now maintains a buffer zone north of the 1974 border with Syria.
