Her body was discovered in her New York City apartment near Columbus Circle on the morning of Wednesday, February 26. Sources from law enforcement revealed to ABC News that Trachtenberg's mother found her in the apartment around 8 a.m. Local authorities have indicated that the actress had recently undergone a liver transplant and may have been facing complications. While the cause of death is not yet confirmed, no signs of foul play have been detected, and the death is believed to be from natural causes. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Trachtenberg’s death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, as she was a much-loved figure who had a wide range of fans. Born to Jewish parents, her mother immigrated from Russia, and Michelle grew up in New York City, speaking both English and Russian. She began her acting career as a child star on Nickelodeon before earning recognition for her breakout role in the 1996 film Harriet the Spy. From there, Trachtenberg’s career blossomed, and she went on to appear in numerous shows and films, often playing relatable teen roles.

One of her most prominent roles was as Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she joined fellow Jewish actresses Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan in the supernatural series. Later, Trachtenberg found further success as a recurring character in the popular teen drama Gossip Girl. In 2004, she starred in the raunchy teen comedy EuroTrip, which was a major hit with young audiences.

Though Trachtenberg’s roles in recent years were more limited, she made a return to Gossip Girl in 2022, appearing in two episodes of the reboot. Trachtenberg was also known for occasionally sharing glimpses of her Jewish heritage on her social media. In 2022, she posted about celebrating Hanukkah, a sentiment she had expressed before on Instagram. Following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, she shared posts showcasing her pride in her Jewish identity, such as wearing a Star of David necklace and urging people to "Please stop hatred towards the innocent."

Her untimely death is a huge loss to her family, friends, and fans. As the entertainment world mourns her passing, her legacy as a versatile and talented actress will undoubtedly remain.
