It was permitted for publication today (Sunday) that a suspect in the murder of a young woman in Ashkelon was arrested at the ticket counter at Ben Gurion Airport just before he fled the country. The suspect, a resident of Ashkelon in his 60s, was arrested by officers from the central unit of the Lachish region.
On December 23, 2024, a report was received at the police's 100 hotline about a body lying under the cliff of the 'National Park' at the beach in Ashkelon. Immediately upon receiving the report, large forces from the Ashkelon police, including forensic investigators from the Lachish region, arrived to secure the scene and investigate the incident, with all lines of inquiry being examined.
In a situational assessment held at the Ashkelon Police Station, led by the Deputy Commander of the Southern District, Superintendent Efi Shiman, it was decided to assign the investigation to the Central Unit of the Lachish Region. The Commander of the Lachish Region, Superintendent Roi Waldman, prioritized the investigation: "We are in a race against time. We have a duty to act quickly and make a swift arrest of the suspect in this heinous murder."
The murder suspect was arrested and transferred for interrogation.
As mentioned, the investigative actions led to the identification of the body as a young woman residing in the city in her 20s and the suspect in the murder as a city resident in his 60s. From the moment the suspect's identity was confirmed, the Central Unit forces and the Ashkelon Police began a race against time to locate him, from his hideout apartment to the ticket counter at Ben Gurion Airport just before he was about to flee the country.
The suspect was arrested and transferred to the Central Unit for investigation, and at the end of the investigation, based on its findings, the case will be transferred to the Southern District Attorney's Office for filing an indictment against him.
The Southern District Commander, Superintendent Chaim Bubli, addressed the rapid resolution of the murder this morning with great appreciation for the forces, led by the Lachish District Police and Ashkelon Police: "The professional actions taken in the early stages of the investigation led to the quick identification of the suspect and shortly thereafter to his arrest, as he attempted to flee the country. This is a clear message to every criminal - the Southern District Police will reach every criminal. This is the basis of our responsibility for public safety and security."
