Tracey Connelly, the mother of Baby P, has been returned to prison two years after her release, following a breach of her parole conditions. Connelly’s recall to jail was authorized by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
The Prison and Probation Service stated: “Offenders released on licence must adhere to strict conditions, and we will not hesitate to recall them to prison if they breach these rules.”
In her 40s, Connelly was originally sentenced to prison in 2009 for causing and allowing the death of her 17-month-old son, Peter, at their home in Tottenham, north London, on August 3, 2007. Known as Baby P, Peter suffered over 50 injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken back. He died from his injuries with lack of intervention by his mother or child services despite being on the at-risk register and receiving numerous visits from social workers, police, and health professionals.
Connelly was initially released on licence in 2013 but was recalled to prison in 2015 for breaching her parole conditions. After being considered for release by the Parole Board in March 2022, the board had determined she was at a "low risk of committing a further offence," a decision that was upheld despite an appeal by then Justice Secretary Dominic Raab.
Connelly will now have to face the Parole Board again in the future to be considered for potential re-release.
