Around two weeks ago, during the evening hours, reports came in to the Jerusalem police centre about a suspicious individual, a 25-year-old armed with a sharp object, who was chasing pedestrians on Shmuel Hanavi Street, prompting calls for help.
Police units were dispatched to the scene, where an officer from Jerusalem Central Station identified the suspect wielding the weapon. At one point, the suspect attempted to break into a car and attacked the officer who confronted him.
Subsequently, the suspect forcefully seized a bicycle from an innocent passer-by and rode towards Zachs Street. The officer initiated pursuit with the help of a civilian.
During the chase, the suspect lunged at the officer with the knife, knocking him down and attempting to stab him. In response to the imminent threat, the officer fired shots at the suspect, with additional officers arriving to apprehend and arrest him.
The officer sustained minor injuries to his head and back. The suspect, arrested on charges including attempted manslaughter, robbery, and assaulting an officer, suffered serious injuries.
A substantial police presence led by Jerusalem District Commander Doron Turgeman responded to investigate the incident's criminal background. Following initial proceedings, the suspect's detention has been periodically extended by the court. Last week, a formal statement was submitted, with the prosecution expected to press charges against the suspect this week.
Reflecting on the incident, Jerusalem District Police Station Commander Shlomi Touboul emphasized, "The swift and decisive response of our officers, under imminent threat to human life, led to the neutralization and apprehension of a dangerous suspect. The professionalism of the officer, who faced the suspect's attempt to stab him, prevented a potential tragedy, safeguarding innocent civillains."
