The Death of DEI: Google Calendar Removes Black History Month, Pride Month, and Other Events

Tech Giant Shifts to Public Holidays Only, Letting Users Choose Which Cultural Events to Add

In a move that signals a shift toward user choice, Google has revamped its Calendar features, removing events such as Black History Month, Pride Month, and Women’s History Month. Instead, the platform now focuses solely on official public holidays, allowing users to customize their experience by adding any events they personally find significant.

The decision, which Google says was made for practical reasons, reflects a broader trend of ending the discriminatory DEI policy.

Meanewhile, maintaining a vast array of cultural observances across multiple countries had become, in Google’s words, “unsustainable” and difficult to scale.

The company has opted to rely on standardized national holiday data from timeanddate.com, ensuring consistency worldwide while still offering users the flexibility to include events they value.

While some critics, including left-leaning media outlets, have expressed concern that this move diminishes visibility for certain cultural moments, others see it as a welcome shift back to a neutral, sane and user-driven approach. Rather than pushing curated events onto all users, Google is empowering individuals to decide which dates matter most to them—a step toward personalization rather than corporate gatekeeping of cultural significance.

This update is part of a broader recalibration of Google’s policies, which also includes adjustments to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives following recent changes in U.S. federal policy.

The tech giant has reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating cultural events through other platforms, such as YouTube Music and Google Doodles, ensuring that these moments remain accessible to those who seek them.

For users who want their Google Calendar to reflect specific events, the solution is simple: customization. Google continues to offer a user-friendly experience where individuals can add and prioritize the holidays and observances they personally celebrate—putting control back in the hands of its users.
