The Growing Wave of Aliyah That Could Change Israel Forever

Antisemitism fuels exodus: Israel should prepare for a potential wave of Olim from this country

Since the devastating events of October 7, Australian Jews have faced unprecedented levels of antisemitism. This shift in hostility has led to growing discussions about aliyah — the immigration of Jews to Israel — and has raised both opportunities and challenges for the Jewish state.

In recent years, a small but steady stream of Israeli expatriates have moved to Australia, seeking relief from Israel's security concerns and internal conflicts, including debates over judicial reform. However, the massacre of October 7 shattered the perception of Australia as a peaceful, far-removed sanctuary. Just days after the attack, on October 9, an antisemitic mob gathered at Sydney’s Opera House, chanting “Gas the Jews.” Incredibly, no arrests were made, and police claimed that they hadn’t heard the chant at all. Since then, the situation has only worsened.

Jewish community members in Australia have reported disturbing incidents, such as children being bullied at public schools for their Jewish identity. At Jewish institutions, security measures have been ramped up, with synagogues and daycare centers becoming targets. A car packed with explosives, targeting Jewish institutions, was discovered. The situation has grown dire, with fears mounting that it’s only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.

For the first time, the Australian Jewish community is considering aliyah not just for reasons of Zionism, but because of the rising threats to their safety. Historically, only a few hundred Jews made aliyah from Australia annually, driven primarily by ideological reasons. Today, however, the situation is different. Many Australian Jews, who had previously considered Israel a distant land, have already started purchasing property in Israel or planning their moves.

This wave of potential aliyah presents both an incredible opportunity and a significant challenge for Israel. Australian Jews are fiercely Zionist, but they are also highly integrated into Australian society. They are well-educated, financially stable, and have made significant contributions to business, law, and culture in Australia. They could bring immense value to Israeli society. However, Israel must prepare for the unique challenges of integrating them into its society.

Unlike other diaspora communities, many Australian Jews are eligible for European passports, meaning Israel faces competition from other countries. Moreover, cultural differences and the physical distance from Israel present additional hurdles. Israel will need to facilitate smoother integration by recognizing Australian professional qualifications, enhancing Hebrew language programs, and offering better support for new olim adjusting to life in Israel.

The current situation in Australia is not necessarily a foregone conclusion. Australia’s upcoming elections could shift the political climate, with the opposition party offering more support to the Jewish community. Yet, for many, the rise in antisemitism among younger generations is a cause for deep concern, leading them to question whether they have a long-term future in Australia.

If the current government remains in power, Israel could see a significant influx of Australian Jews. This presents a historic opportunity for Israel, one that should not be ignored. Even as Israel fights a seven-front war for survival, it must recognize the potential of this wave of aliyah. By embracing these new immigrants, Israel would gain not just new citizens but dedicated individuals eager to contribute to the country’s future.
