From Thrift Shop to Hate Speech
Macklemore's antisemitic new track gains 14 million views in a day, sparking outrage
Macklemore’s new track, “F—ed up,” has quickly garnered attention for all the wrong reasons, with the song attracting over 14 million views in just one day. While the Grammy-winning artist has always been known for speaking out on political issues, this latest release has crossed a line into what many are calling dangerously antisemitic territory.

The track aggressively connects U.S. military support for Israel with America’s economic struggles, while using inflammatory language and promoting divisive rhetoric. In the song, Macklemore raps, “Talkin’ colonizing Gaza from the White House lawn,” painting a one-sided, deeply problematic narrative that erases the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict. The lyrics claim that American struggles are due to support for Israel, a premise that unfairly assigns blame for systemic economic issues to one foreign policy, rather than addressing the many factors at play in the country’s economic challenges.
The accompanying video only escalates the controversy, featuring troubling antisemitic imagery, including the merging of the Israeli flag with a $100 bill. This is not only misleading but invokes harmful stereotypes about Jewish control over money and politics—an age-old trope that has fueled antisemitism for centuries. Macklemore also singles out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “the colonizer,” further demonizing Israel in a way that undermines efforts for peace in the region.
The lyrics go further, claiming that the U.S. government’s financial support of Israel is to blame for "ethnic cleansing," a claim that directly insults both Israelis and Palestinians who are working toward peace. The song implies that supporting Israel’s right to defend itself is akin to supporting genocide—an outrageous and baseless comparison that trivializes the real, complex issues on the ground.
Macklemore has become more radical in his views recently, following his earlier releases such as “Hind’s Hall,” which supported pro-Hamas protests, and “Hind’s Hall 2.” However, his latest offering, which draws disturbing comparisons between the Holocaust and the current conflict in Gaza, crosses a line into hateful rhetoric. The video includes an image of an Arab child in Jenin juxtaposed with a Holocaust photo of a child raising their hands, a deeply inappropriate and offensive comparison that trivializes the horrors of the Holocaust.
From an artist who once championed inclusive messages with his hits like “Thrift Shop,” Macklemore’s sudden shift toward promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories and divisive political views is deeply troubling. His decision to spread such a one-sided and harmful narrative on a global platform is irresponsible and damaging to the cause of peace. While Macklemore is certainly entitled to his opinions, it is crucial to hold him accountable when his words perpetuate hate and sow division. Instead of fostering dialogue and understanding, his latest track only adds fuel to a fire of resentment and hostility.
