Safety 'concerns'
Canadian news site publishes list of Canadian IDF vets, sparking fears for their safety
Jewish community leaders have expressed serious concerns that publishing such information could potentially endanger these individuals, especially given the current climate of heightened tensions and antisemitism.

A Canadian non-profit news website has sparked significant controversy and security concerns by publishing detailed personal information about 85 Canadians and dual Canadian-Israeli citizens who have served in the Israel Defense Forces.
The Maple, which published the extensive list, has included carefully curated social media posts, personal videos, and detailed biographies of the veterans. More troublingly, the site actively solicits readers to submit information on additional Canadians who have served in the IDF, requesting names, military connections, and supporting evidence, while promising to expand the list in the future.
"All of the 85 soldiers I identified were at least partially Jewish," wrote author Davide Mastracci in the article. "This is not a surprise given that Jews are the only people with the ability to immigrate to Israel as citizens based solely on their ethnoreligious background."
The publication has particularly distressed the Jewish community by including Ben Mizrachi, a 22-year-old former IDF medic who was killed while providing medical assistance to victims during the Nova Festival massacre on October 7. The site even posted video footage of his grieving mother.
Many in Canada's Jewish community view this targeting as part of a disturbing trend. "When I told my nephew who serves in the IDF, he just got quiet. Really quiet. These kids are scared, and honestly, so am I," one Israeli-Canadian resident told reporters. "It feels like every week there's something new targeting us just for being Jewish. I've lived in Toronto for 42 years and I've never felt this unwelcome."
The publication comes amid a dramatic 670% increase in antisemitic incidents across Canada since October 7, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Recent incidents include vandalism at Toronto's popular kosher Hosahra restaurant, three separate shootings targeting a Jewish girls' school, and a Molotov cocktail attack on a Montreal synagogue.
